The graphics, sound design, and the way everything seemed so mysterious made you curious to power through the slideshow and abstruse puzzles. RealMyst - The original Myst and Riven had some very inspired and detailed world building, where you really felt like you were in a lived-in place. Uncharted and Tomb Raider series: Say what you will about the scripted aspects of the gameplay and possible over-emphasis on shooting, but those games really make you feel like you're visiting amazing, awe-inspiring locales where lots of memorable things happen.

You can't help but want to know more about it and see as much of it as possible. Shadow of the Colossus, with it's mysteriously empty and gorgeous, sprawling dreamlike world where castles and ruins are rarely "just" castles and ruins like the archetypes found in most games but seem to have an unspoken specific reason for being there and evoke more questions that observations. Not saying those games mentioned above are bad, but what are some games that personally motivated you to want to explore as much as possible and took you on a journey of discovery and wonderment (yeah, sounds cheesy af but you know what I mean)? There are a lot of games labeled as adventure (Grim Fandango, Akham Asylum, Final Fantasy 13, Zelda:TWW, etc) but arguably don't pull it off very well.īe it an uninteresting art style, too much scripted gameplay, limited tech that results in limited-feeling experiences, or the feeling that you're in locations that have no magic and are obviously designed instead of appearing like believable spaces that evoke curiosity, etc.
